In most basic terms, skin cancer is a disease in which malignant cancer cells are found in the outer (ie. upper) layers of your skin. Skin cancer is simply caused by over-exposure to UV rays emitted from the sun or tanning beds. Your skin reacts to this over-exposure by tanning or sunburn, which is a protective reaction to prevent further damage to your skin cells.
